NORDTECH Supports University at Albany Students’ Summer Research Experience
During the summer in 2024, four University at Albany students had the extraordinary opportunity to participate in the College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program(SURP) thanks to nearly $30,000 in support from NORDTECH.
The SURP program, which has provided hands-on high-tech educational opportunities for a decade, is designed to blend academic learning with career exploration in a real research setting through access to UAlbany CNSE’s 200mm Innovation Lab. Co-located with CNSE at NY CREATES’ Albany NanoTech Complex, the Innovation Lab is one of NORDTECH’s core facilities and is benefitting from $8 million in new equipment being installed on behalf of the hub.
Faculty who mentor SURP students provide critical, hands-on training for students across multiple disciplines, with an emphasis on STEM. Many of the projects leverage the semiconductor and microelectronics fabrication, measurement, and design resources at UAlbany CNSE and, now, within NORDTECH. As one of the most diverse public research institutions in the nation, UAlbany and its CNSE has a critical role to play in the diversification of the semiconductor and AI workforce.
The four NORDTECH-supported interns were among 40 students in the 2024 SURP cohort studying chemistry, electrical and computer engineering, environmental and sustainable engineering, nanoscale science and engineering, and computer science. The funding from NORDTECH supported the interns’ stipend and programming costs.
